Vandalize THIS

“Vandalize this”

Graphic collage on artboard

Point of departure for Vandalize this / Vandalize me.

Reference and moodpictures, notes, sketches in display case, later showed at Kunstlijn Haarlem.

Vandalized art, ‘After you’ and ‘behind every man...’ were also triggers to make this work.

Vandalized art, like the attack of Rokeby Venus using a meat cleaver, as a form of protest against the arrest of the suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst. And protesters who douse statues in red paint to decry. The defacement results are often heartbreaking.

After you; a polite formula used to suggest that someone goes in front of or takes a turn before oneself.
What is the use of after you? Used to say politely that someone can go ahead of you or do something before you: “Can I pour you some coffee?” “Oh no, after you.”

Behind every great/successful man there stands a (strong) woman... Said to emphasize that men’s success often depends on the work and support of their wives.
By the way; the original Mark Twain Quote is: “Behind every successful man, there is a woman and behind every unsuccessful man, there are two.”
